Project funded by the European Commission under the Urban Innovative Actions program, which is financed through the European Regional Development Fund. Urban Innovative Actions is an Initiative of the European Union promoting pilot projects in the field of sustainable urban development.
CartujaQanat is a project of urban transformation that will encourage the use of the street as a social revitalizer, improving it and involving in this transformation the entire ecosystem of the city (public and private agents as well as citizens).
The project consists of a new model of urban governance to facilitate the introduction of these models in their expansion through the city, to change the appearance and functionality of the street concept and its future evolution in the next 15 years. In it, a set of actions and elements will be developed that integrate and act as social stimulators; all this to improve universal accessibility and ensure that surface interventions on the existing urbanization manage to reconfigure the town planning.
All of this is aimed to improve universal accessibility and help superficial interventions in existing urbanism to reconfigure it. In addition, it will enhance the recovery of ancestral microclimatic techniques and the recovery and worthiness of artisan work and local agents.
It is, therefore, an innovative experience of urban design that intends to improve environmental comfort, promote social exchange and be more sustainable than conventional city growth models.
Objectives
The overall objective of CartujaQanat project is twofold:
1) to promote the development of an innovative, urban and integrated ecosystem of governance and city strategy towards the adaptation to climate change, in order to reduce the temperature through an integral water cycle management and nature-based solutions, and;
2) to accelerate urban transformation by using the city and the specific area as a social driver and by promoting an innovative governance system throughout the active involvement of Public and Private stakeholders (citizens, organizations and companies), following a multi-actor approach and taking in consideration a wide range of stakeholders participating in the project design, validation and later governance.
CHALLENGE: Climate change has consequences on the population in terms of health, economic development, employment, urban planning, etc. Seville focuses its strategy-city in two main lines responding to two major challenges: develop strategies to adapt to climate change at the local level, and recognize the vital artery character of the streets and neighbourhoods.
PROPOSED SOLUTION: We seek to accelerate urban transformation, inspired by the use of the city as a social dynamic, improving it and involving public, private and citizen transformation in a revolutionary governance system. It will be CartujaQanat and its redesigned site, which will build the model of governance and participation, a showcase that it is possible to improve the urban environment based on the cultural legacy, in a sustainable, profitable and efficient manner and with the participation of all in the adaptation of the climate change.
INNOVATIVENESS & ORIGINALITY: New governance model for the public-private transformation of the city; new business models combining scientific knowledge with cultural heritage in a “LIVING LAB FOR CHANGE through ECOINNOVATION” and adaptation to new solutions for microclimatic improvement:
1- Refreshing facilities (bioclimatic qanat)
2- Underground gallery (zoco)
3- Bioclimatic amphitheatre
CHANGE: To place Seville as a specialized territory in climate change, urban adaptation and bio-climate in order to recover street life, all integrated in a new and innovative governance System.
