Mission

To recycle and valorise all manner of industrial waste or by-products

Methodologies are developed to recycle materials for specific applications that ensure their sustainable and efficient use. The construction industry provides excellent opportunities for waste valorisation, in light of both the large volumes of materials it can accommodate and the versatility of the products used in its value chain. This research group defines the scientific, technical, environmental and social grounds for developing new eco-efficient binders for any number of applications. It focuses in particular on new low-clinker and consequently more sustainable cements, mortars and concretes with innovative self-levelling, self-repairing, thermochromic and sound-proofing features. In all its activities, the group adheres to circular economy guidelines, pursuing waste valorisation as a raw material. The group coordinates the National Research Council’s (Spanish abbreviation, CSIC) ‘Sustainability and Circular Economy’ (PTI-SosEcoCir) interdisciplinary platform. In addition to the participation of 15-plus CSIC groups engaging in the social, life and materials sciences, the platform benefits from the support of non-CSIC public and private institutions. The lines of research covered by member groups are closely related to most of the United Nations’ SDGs.

The materials recycling group also conducts studies on the built heritage, deploying documentary expertise and techniques in the assessment of repair treatment efficacy. Although given their historical and cultural content heritage studies call for a strong humanities background, the material nature of the elements involved and the physical and chemical issues around their conservation necessitate partnering between the human and experimental sciences.
