Material Recycling

Mission

Exploitation of any by-product (waste, scrap material, etc.) generated during an industrial process.

To this end, methodologies are used and developed for materials recycling with specific applications that allow for their sustainable and efficient use. The construction sector offers advantages that allow the recovery of waste, not only because of the large volume of material that can be incorporated, but also because of the versatility of the products to be developed in the different stages of the production chain. This Research Group establishes the scientific, technical, environmental and social bases for the development of new eco-efficient cementing matrices, for diverse applications, such as new cements with low clinker content and therefore more sustainable, mortars and concretes with renewed performance (self-levelling, self-repairing, thermochromic, with acoustic properties, etc.) The Group’s activities comply with the guidelines of the Circular Economy, the aim of which is to provide waste with an alternative “raw material” value. The group is coordinator of the CSIC’s Interdisciplinary Thematic Platform “Sustainability and Circular Economy” (PTI-SosEcoCir). More than 15 CSIC groups from the three global areas of society, life and material participate in this platform, which has a large amount of support from outside the CSIC, both from the public and private sectors. The lines of research of the member groups are closely related to most of the SDO objectives defined by the United Nations.

On the other hand, this group also develops studies in Heritage, applying documentary knowledge and techniques that allow the evaluation of the effectiveness of repair treatments. The historical and cultural nature of heritage places its study and understanding in the field of human sciences, but its material nature and the physical and chemical problems of its conservation make a symbiosis and application of experimental sciences necessary.

Processing of Industrial Waste and residues as active additions to cement

a.- Scientific aspects
Characterization of the material, viability of use, reaction kinetics, stability of the hydrated phases, application of kinetic-diffusive and thermodynamic models of the pozzolanic reaction, microstructural and morphological aspects.
b.- Technical aspects
Design of new Portland cement base matrixes, rheological behaviour of the new matrixes, mechanical-resistant properties, volume stability, durability
c.- Environmental and health aspects
Detection and quantification of contaminating elements, leaching effects and fixing of contaminating elements in the cementing matrixes, elements catalogued as allergens in cements.

Design of New Cementitious Matrixes for Mortars and Concretes

a.- Recovery of industrial residues and waste (active addition and recycled aggregate) in mortars and concretes
High porosity mortar and concrete design.
Design of non-traditional mortars and concretes in adaptation to current regulations.
