Isabel Padilla (Ph.D. Chem.) is a Scientific Researcher at Public Research Institutions, and since January 2021, she has been part of the Materials Department at the Institute of Construction Sciences Eduardo Torroja (CSIC).
From 1990 to 2008, she was part of the Metallurgical Chemical Analysis Research Group at the National Centre for Metallurgical Research of the Spanish National Research Council, where she specialised in developing off- and on-line systems for chemical characterisation of metallic materials at ultratrace levels (SA-ICP-MS, FI-ICP-MS,…); high-resolution rapid chemical characterisation of metallic materials (LA-ICP-MS); developing methodologies for chemical characterisation of metallic materials, from scrap to final product, either in solid state or in solution, at trace or ultratrace levels, and preconcentration/separation of metals from natural and wastewater (adsorption processes, extraction,…).
From 2008 to 2017, she joined the Value-Added Materials group from unconventional sources, working on the synthesis of raw materials from industrial waste (frits, ceramics, zeolites, vitroceramics, hydrotalcites, aluminas, …) using low-cost processes, concentrated solar energy for obtaining metals, minerals, glasses, ceramics, etc., and studying the thermal behaviour of materials, physical, chemical, mineralogical and morphological characterisation of minerals, metallic materials, residues,… and the inertisation of contaminated soils and solidification and stabilisation of hazardous wastes.
Continuing with this activity, Dr. Padilla is currently a member of the Materials and Energy for Sustainable Development (MEDES) group, whose activity focuses on the development of lightweight aggregates, zeolite synthesis from metallurgical waste and the valorisation of industrial waste through environmentally friendly processes using concentrated solar energy as much as possible.
Dr. Padilla has participated in 38 projects, contracts or technical research works.
She has participated in the development of 10 analytical standards, certification of 18 reference materials (CRM), and 4 standardisation procedures. She is co-author of 65 articles, 14 books, and 10 book chapters. Co-inventor of 3 patents. She has presented scientific communications at 51 congresses, both nationally and internationally.
